Molloy College Continuing Education for Nurses

Overview

Molloy University -- A Top-Ranked College Close to Manhattan

Molloy University is an independent, Catholic college guided by the traditional Dominican values of study, spirituality, service and community. Located in Rockville Centre, on Long Island, the school is just a 40 minute train ride from New York City.

The 3,400 undergraduates at Molloy enjoy a student-teacher ratio of 10:1 within an acclaimed academic environment. In fact, Molloy is the only college in the nation to be named a Top 3 value by Money magazine for two consecutive years. Molloy's rankings were based on a variety of factors, including graduation rates and earnings of graduates. The college also ranks among the Top Tier Institutions by "US News and World Report" in its Regional Universities -- North category. "Princeton Review" also recognizes it as one of the Best Northeastern Colleges.

Specialists in Nursing Education

Nursing education is an area of specialty for Molloy University, with a new School of Nursing devoted to the discipline. The nursing program has advanced steadily since its inception in 1955, and is now one of the largest undergraduate nursing programs in the country. The program is housed within the new, state-of-the-art Barbara H. Hagan Center for Nursing, which opened in 2016.

The goal of the School of Nursing is to deliver, design, and evaluate nursing care that is evidence-based, humanistic, and responsive to the ethical, cultural, spiritual, and psychosocial needs of the community.

Molloy offers an array of academic options for nursing students, including a traditional bachelor's degree track, dual degree programs, degree completion and accelerated second bachelor's degree programs. The Barbara H. Hagan School of Nursing also includes master's programs (four nurse practitioner tracks, clinical nurse specialist, nurse education and nurse administration with informatics, and a combined MS/MBA track); post-master's certificate programs (10 program options); and two doctoral programs (PhD and DNP).

The School of Nursing has articulation agreements with the Departments of Nursing at Nassau Community College, Queensboro Community College, Suffolk Community College, the State University of New York at Farmingdale, and Delhi College.

Nursing Bachelor's Degree with Humanistic Focus

The traditional bachelor's degree program draws from both liberal arts and sciences to teach nurse generalists to communicate, evaluate, and provide humanistic health care. The curriculum includes clinical experiences beginning sophomore year, as well as a culminating one-on-one practicum placement during senior year.

Upon completion of the program, nurses are prepared to serve as members of interdisciplinary health care teams in a range of settings, including pediatrics, critical care, obstetrics, and psychiatry.

Graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN examination for the license required to practice nursing as a registered professional nurse in New York State or other chosen state.

Degree Completion Programs

Molloy University also offers two degree completion programs for those already working in the nursing profession.

The LPN -- BS mobility program covers the same curriculum as the traditional degree program, but gives the licensed practical nurse academic credit for past work experience. Program graduates are eligible to sit for the NCLEX examination to earn a registered nurse (RN) license.

Similarly, the degree completion program for registered nurses provides advanced placement for students with associate degrees and/or relevant work experience through either transfer of credit or through testing. The graduate will earn a bachelor's degree in nursing (BS).

Accelerated Dual Degree Programs

Nursing students may also concurrently earn both bachelor's and master's degrees through two convenient accelerated dual degree programs.

Student with non-nursing bachelor degrees may enroll in the dual degree program for second degree nurses. This program allows learners to enroll in both undergraduate and graduate courses. After earning the bachelor's degree, the student may then sit for the NCLEX-RN examination for the registered nurse license -- required for continuing on with graduate study.

Molloy provides a similar dual degree program for RNs who hold associate degrees or diplomas.

Hagan Center for Nursing -- Labs and Simulations

The Hagan Center features the latest technology in classrooms and labs, as well as approximately 20 Sim men/women that will allow the students to asses, provide care and perform procedures on these simulated people before working with real patients in medical facilities. The nursing lab offers resources such as study guides, video tapes, computer programs, and simulation instructors that guide students through relevant medical scenarios.

Professional Conferences

Molloy University regularly hosts professional nursing conferences, demonstrating its leadership in nursing education. Conferences are often organized with prestigious medical centers, such as the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, among others.

Study Abroad Opportunities

Nursing students may participate in study abroad programs through the Office of International Education. Students may choose from short-term, semester, or year-long study. Molloy College works with international organizations, universities, and other groups to offer these opportunities.

Honors Program

Incoming freshmen, including nursing students, may apply to the Molloy University Honors Program, which includes freshman and sophomore year courses in art, biology, history, literature, music, philosophy, sociology, and theology. The honors nursing students take a special medical ethics course taught by the honors faculty members.

Specialized ROTC for Nursing

Students interested in combining both a nursing career and a Navy career may enroll in a specialized Reserve Officer's Training Corps program for nursing, offered in conjunction with the SUNY Maritime College.

Athletic Opportunities

Athletics are well-established at the college, with programs in lacrosse, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, tennis, cross country, equestrian and dance team. Students compete in the New York College Athletic Conference (NYCAC) and the NCAA - Division II.
